“Beloved Community”
Summer Maker Collaboration @ The Brightmoor MakerSPACE
An intergenerational collaborative summer program in Detroit, practicing the beloved community through hands-on craft skills, earth healing, experiential learning and conversation, culminating in the 3rd annual Brightmoor Maker Festival.
ACTION WEEK: July 19 – 26, 2026
FULL PROGRAM: June 29 – August 7, 2026
MAKER FESTIVAL: July 25 – 26, 2026
Open to youth, artists, educators, and community members.
By embodying the ideal of the beloved community, we are building The School of the Future; reimagining education through creativity, initiative, and project-based learning.
The summer is ongoing (people come and go, projects build over time) but the heart of it gathers during Action Week (July 19–26). This is when more people arrive, and collaborative work comes into focus in preparation for MakerFest (July 25-26).
You can come just for that week, or stay longer before or after.
Summer at the Makerspace
A collaborative experience of coming together with the Brightmoor Makers (high school students from Detroit Community High School and surrounding community) to build, create, and bring ideas into form.
Projects take shape inside the makerspace (including woodworking, weaving, electronics, film, design, and printing) and out in the Sunbridge Community Healing Park (where we will be beautifying the park with art installations and earth healing & shaping).
The program culminates in MakerFest (July 25-26) where creations are showcased & sold, workshops are held, and there is music and food in a blockparty style celebration of the summer’s work.
Some people arrive with a clear idea or initiative they want to bring. If that’s you, you’re welcome to reach out by June 1.
Others come and are along for the co-creative ride that the summer offers! If that’s you, register or reach out with questions!
Alongside the work, there are shared meals, conversation, and time spent together. For those who aren’t local, camping is available — reach out for more information about accommodation.
